What is a Sazerac or Old Fashioned drink?

An Old Fashioned cocktail is an uncomplicated drink that has been popular for decades. This laid-back recipe dresses up whiskey with just a couple of ingredients. The classic recipe includes:

  • Soaking an ice cube with sugar and bitters.
  • Pouring a shot of whiskey into a glass.
  • Adorning the drink with an orange peel and a cherry.

The Old Fashioned recipe was born from the Sazerac Cocktail. Sazerac is a famous French brandy, and the Sazerac Cocktail was a popular drink created in New Orleans in the 1800s. When the Phylloxera infestation hit France in the late 1800s, the imported French brandy was limited in its production, making it hard to use in this wildly popular recipe. New Orleans bartenders replaced the brandy with American rye whiskies. This is the recipe you are most familiar with today.

What is Fairy Dust?

Our expert mixologist Jared Hirsch explains:

"The marriage of Fairy Dust with whiskey finds its roots in the oldest of cocktails, the Sazerac. This legendary drink is one of the earliest versions of what we today call the old fashioned. This cocktail blends barrel-aged spirits, either Cognac in its original form, or Rye whiskey in its modern incarnation with absinthe, a touch of sugar, and Peychaud's bitters.

Fairy Dust is our tribute to absinthe with its harmony of fennel, anise and wormwood. It wasn't much of a leap to replace both the absinthe and sugar with our delightful syrup. The interplay of spicy vanilla-tinged whiskey, along with the herbaceous qualities found in anise and wormwood is what makes this cocktail stand apart from the classic recipe."

This combination is as playful as it is smooth. We think you'll enjoy its novel and fresh qualities as much as we do.
